The Kodak Tri-X 400 Look
Kodak Tri-X 400 is the defining black and white film. It shaped decades of photojournalism, street photography, and documentary work. Its look is distinctive: high contrast, visible grain, deep blacks, and a gritty energy that makes every frame feel urgent and real. While Fujifilm's ACROS is based on their own Neopan line (smoother, more refined), with the right settings you can push it toward the grittier, punchier Tri-X aesthetic.

Start with ACROS as your base simulation, then apply these adjustments:

Tips for Authenticity
- Tri-X thrives in harsh light. Midday sun, hard shadows, and high contrast scenes suit it perfectly
- Don't be afraid of deep blacks. Tri-X was contrasty film. Let shadows go dark.
- Push processing has no digital equivalent: pushing film means underexposing and then over-developing, and there is no development stage here. Underexposing a JPEG just darkens it. Get the contrast from the tone curve and the grit from Grain Effect instead
- If ACROS + Red feels too smooth, try the standard Monochrome simulation which has coarser grain
Common Questions
Use ACROS + Red filter with high contrast (Highlight +2, Shadow +2), strong grain (Strong/Large), and Sharpness +2. Shoot at DR100 for maximum contrast. The key difference from standard ACROS is the aggressive grain and high contrast. Tri-X is gritty and punchy, not smooth and refined.
ACROS (based on Neopan 100 ACROS) has finer grain, smoother tonal transitions, and more refined highlight rendering. Tri-X 400 has coarser grain, higher contrast, and a grittier, more photojournalistic feel. To emulate Tri-X on Fujifilm, use ACROS with Red filter and increase contrast and grain significantly.
