Fujifilm Film Simulations: A Side-by-Side Comparison

Why Film Simulations Matter
Fujifilm is the only digital camera manufacturer that spent decades making actual photographic film before building cameras. That heritage is not just marketing. Every film simulation in a Fujifilm camera traces back to a real emulsion the company produced, tested, and refined over years of feedback from working photographers. When you select Classic Chrome or Velvia in your camera menu, you are drawing on colour science that was originally developed for physical film stock, not invented from scratch by a software team.
This matters because it gives Fujifilm simulations a coherence that generic "picture styles" on other camera systems lack. Canon, Nikon, and Sony all offer colour profiles, but those profiles were designed in isolation as digital presets. Fujifilm's approach starts from a known reference point: how did Provia 100F actually render a sunset? How did Velvia handle green foliage? The digital versions aim to match those characteristics, which is why they tend to feel more intentional and less like Instagram filters bolted onto a camera.
The practical upside is that you can shoot JPEG with confidence. Many Fujifilm photographers rarely touch their RAW files because the in-camera output already has the colour character they want. Choosing the right simulation before you press the shutter is a genuine creative decision, not a compromise. This guide walks through every simulation available in the Fujifilm X and GFX systems, grouped by character and heritage, so you can make that choice with intent rather than guesswork.
The Slide Films: Provia, Velvia, and Astia
The three original simulations in every Fujifilm camera are all based on slide films (transparency film, or "reversal" film in technical language). Slide film produces a positive image directly on the film strip, which means what you see on the lightbox is what you get. There is very little room for correction after the fact, so each slide film was engineered with a specific colour and contrast character baked in. Understanding these three gives you a foundation for everything else.
Provia: The Baseline
Provia is the default simulation on every Fujifilm body, and for good reason. Based on Fujichrome Provia 100F, it aims for accurate, neutral colour with moderate contrast and saturation. If you want a photograph that looks like what your eyes saw, Provia is the starting point.
In practice, Provia is more interesting than "neutral" suggests. It has a slight warmth to skin tones and handles mixed lighting better than a truly flat profile would. It is the simulation most photographers leave on when they are not sure what they will be shooting, and there is no shame in that. Provia with a slight white balance tweak is a perfectly good everyday look. Where it falls short is in scenes that need a strong mood or visual identity. Provia will faithfully record what is in front of you, but it will not add much character of its own.
Velvia: Saturated Landscapes
Fujichrome Velvia 50 was one of the most famous slide films ever made, beloved by landscape photographers for its punchy saturation and rich, deep colours. The digital simulation follows suit: blues go deeper, greens go more vivid, reds and oranges practically glow. Contrast is noticeably higher than Provia, with shadows that fall off quickly into black.
Velvia is extraordinary for the right subject. Autumn foliage, dramatic skies, saturated sunsets, coastal scenes with deep blue water. Anything where you want the colour to hit hard. But it is a specialist tool, not an everyday simulation. Skin tones under Velvia can look sunburnt or ruddy, and in flat, overcast light the added saturation has nothing interesting to amplify, so images can look garish rather than dramatic. Reach for Velvia when the scene already has strong colour and you want to push it further.
Astia: The Portrait Slide Film
Fujichrome Astia 100F was designed as a softer alternative to Provia, specifically targeting portrait and fashion photographers who needed accurate but flattering skin tones on transparency film. The digital Astia simulation lowers saturation slightly compared to Provia and softens contrast, particularly in the midtones where skin detail lives.
Astia is underused. Many photographers skip straight to Pro Neg. or REALA ACE for portraits, but Astia has a particular quality that those simulations lack: it retains the clarity and transparency of slide film while being gentle with skin. Colours stay clean and defined rather than going muddy. It works well for studio portraits with controlled lighting, product photography where you want accurate but attractive colour, and any situation where Provia feels just slightly too contrasty for the mood you want.
Classic Chrome and Classic Neg.
These two simulations are arguably the reason many photographers choose Fujifilm in the first place. They both deliver an immediately recognisable "film look" straight out of camera, but they go about it in very different ways.
Classic Chrome: The Documentary Look
Classic Chrome was introduced with the X30 in 2014 and quickly became one of the most popular simulations in the system. It desaturates colours and shifts them towards a muted, earthy palette while adding depth to shadows. The effect is often compared to the look of old photojournalism magazines, or the colour grading of 1970s documentary photography.
What makes Classic Chrome special is how it handles the relationship between highlights and shadows. Highlights stay restrained and slightly warm, while shadows go rich and deep without crushing to pure black. This gives images a three-dimensional quality that flatter profiles lack. Classic Chrome really comes alive in overcast light, where its muted palette turns grey days into something atmospheric rather than dull. It is also superb for street photography, travel, and any situation where you want the scene to feel grounded and real rather than polished.
The one caveat is that Classic Chrome can make already-desaturated scenes look anaemic. If you are shooting in heavy fog or on a very grey winter day, you might find that Provia or Classic Neg. gives you more to work with.
Classic Neg.: The Instant Film Look
Classic Neg. arrived with the X-Pro3 in 2019 and became an overnight sensation. It is inspired by consumer colour negative film, the kind you would buy in a high street chemist and have processed at a one-hour lab. The defining characteristics are warm amber tones in the shadows, a subtle cyan-blue shift in the highlights, and noticeably high contrast that gives images a punchy, graphic quality.
The appeal of Classic Neg. is that it makes almost everything look good without trying too hard. The warm shadows add a sense of nostalgia and comfort, while the cooler highlights keep images from feeling muddy. It handles skin tones well, works in both bright sun and shade, and gives everyday subjects a sense of occasion. Classic Neg. is the simulation that most often makes people say "that looks like film" without being able to pinpoint exactly why.
If you are choosing between Classic Chrome and Classic Neg. for a day out, think about the mood you want. Classic Chrome is cooler, more restrained, more serious. Classic Neg. is warmer, more inviting, more casual. Classic Chrome suits rainy cities and quiet documentation. Classic Neg. suits golden hour, cafe scenes, and portraits of friends. Neither is better; they are different tools for different feelings.
Nostalgic Neg. and REALA ACE
These are the two newest colour simulations in the Fujifilm system, both introduced on X-Trans V sensor bodies. They represent two very different philosophies: Nostalgic Neg. is all about mood and character, while REALA ACE prioritises faithful, natural colour. Between them, they fill gaps that the older simulations left open.
Nostalgic Neg.: The Expired Film Look
Nostalgic Neg. does not attempt to replicate any specific Fujifilm stock. Instead, it captures the feeling of old colour negative film that has been sitting in a drawer for a few years: shifted colours, warm amber highlights, a distinctive magenta cast in the midtones, and softer contrast overall. The result is immediately distinctive and surprisingly versatile.
The colour shifts in Nostalgic Neg. are strong enough that you will either love them or find them too much. Greens lean towards yellow-green, blues take on a slightly purple quality, and skin tones pick up a warm, rosy cast that works beautifully in golden light but can look odd under cool fluorescent lighting. This is a simulation that rewards you for paying attention to your light source. In late afternoon sun or warm interior light, Nostalgic Neg. produces images with genuine emotional warmth. Under harsh midday sun or mixed artificial lighting, the colour shifts can fight against the scene rather than complementing it.
Nostalgic Neg. is at its best for lifestyle photography, candid portraits, travel diaries, and any work where you want your images to feel like memories rather than documents.
REALA ACE: The Truthful Negative
REALA ACE is based on Fujicolor Superia Reala, a consumer negative film that was engineered with a fourth colour layer to improve accuracy under different light sources. The digital simulation carries that philosophy forward: it prioritises natural, accurate colour reproduction with smooth tonal gradations and particularly refined skin tone rendering.
Where Provia is neutral in a "transparency film" way, with clean, slightly cool precision, REALA ACE is neutral in a "negative film" way, with softer transitions and a gentler overall character. Contrast is lower than Provia, highlights roll off more gradually, and shadow detail is better preserved. The difference is subtle but meaningful: Provia images look like well-exposed slides, while REALA ACE images look like well-printed negatives.
REALA ACE is an excellent choice for portrait sessions, family photography, events, and any situation where you want accurate colour without the clinical precision of Provia. If someone asks you for "natural-looking photos," this is probably the simulation to reach for.
The Pro Neg. Pair: Hi and Std
Pro Neg. Hi and Pro Neg. Std are the simulations that most Fujifilm photographers scroll past, and that is a shame. They were designed for professional studio work, based on Fujifilm's professional portrait negative films, and they offer something that the more characterful simulations do not: a clean, controlled foundation for photographers who want to shape the final look themselves.
Pro Neg. Std: Maximum Latitude
Pro Neg. Std has the lowest contrast and most neutral colour rendering of any colour simulation in the system. It is designed to give you the most information in the file and the least baked-in character, which makes it ideal when you know you will be editing afterwards. Shadows stay open, highlights resist clipping, and colours are accurate without any particular emphasis.
Think of Pro Neg. Std as the closest thing Fujifilm offers to a "flat" profile for stills. It will not win any hearts straight out of camera, but if you are shooting a commercial job or a portrait session where the client has specific colour requirements, it gives you the room to get there in post. It also works well for event photography under mixed lighting, where a more opinionated simulation might clash with the colour temperature shifts between different light sources in a venue.
Pro Neg. Hi: Studio-Ready Contrast
Pro Neg. Hi takes the same neutral colour science as Std and adds a moderate contrast boost. The result is an image that still looks professional and controlled but has enough punch to be usable without editing. Skin tones stay natural, colours remain accurate, and the added contrast gives faces definition without harsh shadows.
Pro Neg. Hi is the better choice when you need to deliver images quickly, as at a corporate event or a high-volume portrait session, but still want that clean, professional quality. Paired with good lighting, it produces the kind of quietly competent images that clients love: nothing flashy, nothing distracting, just well-rendered people and accurate colour.
Eterna, Bleach Bypass, and the Cinematic Look
Fujifilm manufactured motion picture film stock for decades under the Eterna brand, supplying major film studios worldwide. The Eterna simulation and its Bleach Bypass variant bring that cinema heritage into the stills and video world.
Eterna: The Colourist's Starting Point
Eterna is a low-saturation, low-contrast simulation designed to behave like cinema negative film: it captures a wide range of tones and colours without committing to any particular look. The idea is that a colourist (or you, in your editing software) will shape the final grade afterwards, just as a film colourist would work with scanned cinema negative.
For video work, Eterna is extremely useful. It gives you far more latitude in post than shooting with a contrastier simulation, and its muted colour palette means you can push the grade in any direction without fighting against baked-in character. For stills, Eterna is more niche. Images straight out of camera look flat and undersaturated, which is the whole point, but means extra work. If you enjoy editing and want maximum creative control over your final look, Eterna is worth exploring. If you prefer the out-of-camera experience, other simulations will serve you better.
Bleach Bypass: The Gritty Alternative
Bleach bypass is a darkroom technique where the bleach step in colour film processing is partially or fully skipped, leaving silver halide crystals in the emulsion alongside the colour dyes. The result is a distinctive look: desaturated colours, increased contrast, a slightly metallic quality to highlights, and a gritty, textured feel. You have seen it in films like "Saving Private Ryan" and "Minority Report."
The Fujifilm Bleach Bypass simulation recreates this effect digitally. It takes Eterna's cinema colour science and adds higher contrast with reduced saturation, producing images that feel cinematic in a very different way from standard Eterna. It is dramatic, moody, and works particularly well for urban scenes, architectural photography, and any subject that benefits from a harder, more graphic treatment.
Bleach Bypass is worth trying for stills even if you never shoot video. It gives you a look that is difficult to replicate with other simulations and basic adjustments, and it suits subjects that would look too pretty or too clean with Classic Chrome or Classic Neg.
Black and White: ACROS, Monochrome, and Sepia
Fujifilm offers two distinct approaches to black and white photography, plus a warm-toned variant. The difference between ACROS and standard Monochrome is not just branding. They produce genuinely different results, and understanding why will help you choose the right one.
ACROS: Fine Art Black and White
ACROS is based on Neopan 100 ACROS, a fine-grain black and white film that was a favourite of studio and landscape photographers for its exceptional tonal gradation and almost invisible grain at low ISO. The digital simulation reproduces that character: smooth, rich tones with deep blacks, clean highlights, and a grain structure that looks organic rather than digital when you add the in-camera grain effect.
What sets ACROS apart from standard Monochrome is how it handles the conversion from colour to luminance. ACROS uses a more sophisticated algorithm that preserves subtle tonal differences, particularly in skin and in textures like fabric, stone, and foliage. The result is images with more depth and dimensionality. If you are serious about black and white work, ACROS should be your default choice.
ACROS is available with Yellow, Red, and Green colour filter options. These simulate the effect of placing a coloured glass filter in front of the lens, which changes how different colours are translated into shades of grey. The Yellow filter slightly darkens blue skies while keeping skin tones natural, making it the most versatile choice for general shooting. The Red filter dramatically darkens skies and water for high-contrast landscape work, and also lightens skin, which can be flattering for portraits. The Green filter lightens foliage and slightly darkens skin, useful for garden and nature photography where you want green leaves to glow.
Monochrome: The Straightforward Option
Standard Monochrome is a simpler, more contrasty black and white conversion. It lacks the tonal finesse of ACROS but has a punchier, more immediate quality that works well for street photography and documentary work where you want images with graphic impact rather than subtle tonal range.
Monochrome offers the same Yellow, Red, and Green colour filter options as ACROS, and they behave the same way. The difference is in the underlying conversion: Monochrome produces slightly harder contrast and less gradation in the midtones. For quick, high-impact black and white work, it is perfectly good. For anything where tonal subtlety matters, choose ACROS.
Sepia: Warm-Toned Monochrome
Sepia converts images to a warm brown monochrome that recalls antique photographic prints. The toning is relatively subtle and the contrast is soft, giving images a nostalgic, archival quality. It is a specialist simulation for specific creative purposes rather than a general-use black and white option. Historical subjects, heritage architecture, and deliberate vintage-style projects are where Sepia earns its place.
Camera Compatibility: What is Available on Your Body
Not every Fujifilm camera has every simulation. New simulations are added with new sensor generations, and Fujifilm does not backport them to older hardware. Knowing what your camera supports saves you from wondering why a simulation you have read about does not appear in your menu.
The Original Set (Available on All Bodies)
Provia, Velvia, Astia, Pro Neg. Hi, Pro Neg. Std, Monochrome (with colour filters), and Sepia have been available since the earliest X-series cameras. Every Fujifilm interchangeable lens camera and every premium compact supports these. They are your guaranteed baseline regardless of which body you own.
X-Trans III Additions
Classic Chrome arrived first on the X30 compact in 2014 and was rolled out to X-Trans II bodies via firmware updates before becoming a standard inclusion from X-Trans III onwards. ACROS (with its colour filter variants) was introduced with the X-Pro2 and the X-Trans III generation. Bodies in this generation include the X-T3, X-T30, X-Pro2, X-E3, and X100F.
X-Trans IV Additions
The X-Trans IV generation brought Classic Neg. (debuting on the X-Pro3) and Eterna Bleach Bypass. These are available on the X-T4, X-T3, X-T30 II, X-Pro3, X-E4, X-S10, and X100V. Eterna itself debuted earlier on the X-H1 (X-Trans III). This generation marked a significant expansion of the simulation library and is when Fujifilm's JPEG output became genuinely competitive with dedicated editing for many photographers.
X-Trans V Additions
The current X-Trans V generation added Nostalgic Neg. and REALA ACE, bringing the total colour simulation count to its current level. X-Trans V bodies include the X-T5, X-T50, X-H2, X-H2S, X-S20, X-E5, X-M5, and X100VI. The GFX medium format system also receives simulation updates with new bodies, and current GFX models support the full simulation set.
A Note on Firmware Updates
Fujifilm has occasionally added simulations to older bodies through firmware updates, as it did with Classic Chrome on some X-Trans II cameras. However, this is not guaranteed and depends on whether the older processor can handle the new simulation's processing requirements. If a simulation is not listed in your camera's menu after updating to the latest firmware, it is not supported on your hardware.

Choosing Your Simulation: A Practical Framework
Rather than memorising a lookup table of "use X for Y," it helps to have a simple framework for choosing a simulation in the moment. Start with three questions: what is the light doing, what am I shooting, and what mood do I want?
Start with the Light
Light quality matters more than subject when choosing a simulation. Warm, golden light pairs naturally with simulations that have warm character: Classic Neg., Nostalgic Neg., even Velvia for landscapes. Cool, overcast light works beautifully with Classic Chrome, whose muted palette turns grey skies into atmosphere. Harsh midday light is best handled by lower-contrast simulations like Astia, Pro Neg. Std, or REALA ACE, which will not blow out highlights or crush shadows as aggressively. Mixed artificial lighting calls for neutral simulations like Provia or Pro Neg. Std that will not amplify colour cast problems.
Consider Your Subject
People generally look best with Astia, REALA ACE, Classic Neg., or Pro Neg. Hi. These all handle skin tones with care and avoid the unflattering saturation boosts that Velvia or the colour shifts that Nostalgic Neg. can introduce. Landscapes and nature respond well to Velvia's saturation or Classic Chrome's depth. Architecture and urban scenes suit Classic Chrome, Bleach Bypass, or ACROS. Street photography works with almost anything, but Classic Chrome, Classic Neg., and ACROS are the community favourites for good reason.
Set the Mood
This is where personal preference takes over. Do you want the image to feel warm and inviting? Classic Neg. or Nostalgic Neg. Cool and restrained? Classic Chrome. Dramatic? Velvia or Bleach Bypass. Timeless and neutral? Provia or REALA ACE. There is no wrong answer here, only the question of whether the simulation's character supports the feeling you want the photograph to carry.
Layer in Adjustments
Film simulations are a starting point, not a final destination. Every Fujifilm camera lets you adjust colour temperature, tone curve (highlights and shadows independently), colour saturation, sharpness, and grain effect on top of the base simulation. A slight white balance shift towards amber can warm up Classic Chrome. Pulling shadow tone down by one or two stops gives Provia more punch. Adding grain to Classic Neg. pushes the analogue feel further. These adjustments are how you move from using a simulation to making it your own, and they are the foundation of the custom recipe system that this app is built around.
The best way to learn what works for you is to pick two or three simulations and shoot with them for a week each, paying attention to how they respond to different subjects and lighting. You will quickly develop an instinct for which simulation to reach for in any given moment, and that instinct is worth more than any comparison chart.
